Help with Adobe Acrobat

Displaying Search Results in Acrobat Reader XI

Acrobat Reader XI no longer allows search highlights from an external highlight server. After you conduct your search and open a newspaper file, you may use the Acrobat Reader Find Text tool Find Text tool to locate your search terms within that page.

Displaying the Toolbar in Acrobat Reader XI

The default toolbar view mode in Acrobat Reader XI is the Read Mode display, which is a disappearing toolbar. If you mouse over that toolbar and click the squiggly A it will toggle the toolbar to the top, but that goes away with every new PDF you open. To have the toolbar permanently on top, open Acrobat Reader 10 outside of the browser, choose Edit --> Preferences --> Internet, and untick "Display in Read Mode by default", then press OK. You can always minimize that toolbar by clicking the "View File in Read Mode" button, which is a square button with two arrows.

Tips for Adding Magnifcation and Search Tools Acrobat Reader XI

Right click on the toolbar, go to Edit --> Find and that will set the Find Text button (magnifying glass) or the Advance Search button (binoculars) on your toolbar. Feel free to remove the extra buttons you may not need frequently. Access to those tools is available if you right click on the toolbar and select the tool. Add other buttons you may use frequently, like the dynamic zoom tool (magnifying glass), and the image select tool (camera). These changes should stick so you only have to do them once.

Mozilla has released Firefox version 19 with an embedded PDF viewer.

http://blog.mozilla.org/blog/2013/02/19/firefox-introduces-pdf-viewer-to-browse-the-web-without-interruption/

At this time the embedded PDF viewer does not allow hit highlighting in ArchivalWare. To disable the Firefox viewer and use the Adobe Reader plugin follow the instructions below:

1. Launch Firefox - In the address bar type about:config (if you see a void warranty message ignore and click "I'll be careful, I promise"). Find the "pdfjs.disabled" parameter in the list and double click to change to "true".

2. From the top menu in Firefox, select Options>Options>Applications and make sure that for Adobe Acrobat Document "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)" is selected.

Restart Firefox, you should then be able to view pdfs inside Firefox using the Adobe plugin.

If you have Adobe Acrobat installed you must follow the additional step below;

4. From the top menu in Firefox, select Help>Troubleshooting Information. Go to Application Basics, then Profile Folder and click on Show Folder. A window with your profile directory will open. Delete the following two files inside your profiles directory:
mimetypes.rdf
pluginreg.dat

Exit Firefox. When you restart Firefox, you should be able to view pdfs inside Firefox using the Adobe plugin.

Right click in a blank space on the Acrobat Reader toolbar, go to More Tools and a box will appear that lists the options:

Select the tools you wish to add to the toolbar. We recommend the Hand Tool, the Marquee Zoom, Zoom In and Zoom Out, Actual Size and Fit Width. You will only need to do this once, and Acrobat Reader will remember your settings across sessions and with different browsers. Click OK to save your changes.

Printing

There are many printing options in Acrobat Reader. You can scale the printing to fit the printable area, shrink or fit, or tile large format pages.

Acrobat Printing Options

Options in the Print dialog box

Most of the options in the Adobe Acrobat® Print dialog box are the same for other applications, however there will be some minor variations that are operating system specific.

Current View/Selected Graphic Prints the page area that is visible in the current view. The option name changes depending on whether you have no pages selected (Current View), a page or pages selected (Selected Pages), or an area on a page selected using the Snapshot tool (Selected Graphic).

Current Page Prints the page that is visible in the current view.

Page Scaling Reduces, enlarges, or divides pages when printing.
None
Prints the upper left or center of a page (if auto-rotated and centered) without scaling. Pages or selections that don’t fit on the paper are cropped.
Fit To Printable Area
Reduces or enlarges each page to fit the printable area of the currently selected paper size. For PostScript® printers, the PPD determines the printable area of the paper.
Shrink To Printable Area
Shrinks large pages to fit the currently selected paper size but doesn’t enlarge small pages. If an area is selected and is larger than the printable area of the currently selected paper, it’s scaled to fit the printable area. This option is always active during N-up printing.l
Tile Large Pages
Applies tiling to pages that are larger than the selected paper size at the specified scale. These pages are mapped to multiple sheets of paper. If this option is selected, you can also specify settings for Tile Scale, Overlap, Cut Marks, and Labels.
Tile All Pages
Applies tiling to all pages, regardless of size. However, only the pages that are larger than the selected paper size at the specified scale are mapped to multiple sheets of paper. If this option is selected, you can also specify settings for Tile Scale, Overlap, Cut Marks, and Labels.
Multiple Pages Per Sheet
Enables N-up printing, where multiple pages print on the same sheet of paper. If this option is selected, you can also specify settings for Pages Per Sheet, Page Order, Print Page Border, and Auto-Rotate Pages.
Pages Per Sheet
Prints a predefined number of pages, or a custom number (up to 99), horizontally and vertically during N-up printing. If you select a predefined number from the menu, Acrobat automatically selects the best paper orientation.
Page Order
Defines how the pages are ordered on paper during N-up printing. Horizontal places pages from left to right, top to bottom. Horizontal Reversed places pages from right to left, top to bottom. Vertical places pages top to bottom, left to right. Vertical Reversed places pages top to bottom, right to left. Both reversed options are suitable for Asian-language documents.
Print Page Border
Draws the crop box (the page boundary of PDF pages) during N-up printing.
Auto-Rotate And Center
Adjusts the page orientation to match the orientation specified in the printer properties.
Choose Paper Source By PDF Page Size (Windows)
Uses the PDF page size to determine the output tray rather than the page setup option. This option is useful for printing PDFs that contain multiple page sizes on printers that have different-sized output trays.
